Automatic soil-moisture control for sugarcane irrigation research. Ten soil-moisture sensors feed a PLC that works out how much water each plot needs and drives the valves to hold the target the researchers set. Data goes to Google Drive and is viewed in Looker Studio, with no monthly fee.

The problem
The research asks how little water sugarcane can receive while its sweetness stays the same. That means holding soil moisture at a set level for the whole trial and recording the water actually applied every time, which cannot be done by hand consistently.
What we built
Soil-moisture sensors sit in the trial plots. A PLC reads them, calculates the water needed to reach the target moisture, and opens and closes the valves itself. Researchers set the target themselves, separately for each treatment. Every record is uploaded to Google Drive and shown in Looker Studio, so storing the data carries no monthly or yearly fee.

- In use at the Kasetsart University trial greenhouse
- Holds soil moisture for two treatments, each at its own target
- Logging continuously since January 2025, more than 38,000 records
- No monthly fee for storing or viewing the data
